Any lines created from the removal of the ground will be exposed to the acid and create a groove in the surface of the metal. Once the ground has fully coated the surface, the artist can go back in with a variety of tools and remove some of the material. ![]() The ground will act as a resist to the acid that will etch the design. This can be done by either painting the liquid form on, or melting a solid piece and spreading it across the surface with a brayer. Any metal curls or flakes (called burrs) are removed with a scraper then smoothed with a burnisher.Įtching: After the metal is cleaned a solution called a ground is spread over the entire surface. To create tone, the artist can use a series of lines to make cross-hatching marks that will darken certain areas. After, the artist can go back in with an engraving tool and carve out the lines. Once that is finished the artist lightly draws their design on the surface using a scribe tool. The surface is first buffed and cleaned to ensure a controlled working surface. Here is a link to open a powerpoint that describes the materials needed for intaglio:Įngraving: A metal plate (either zinc or copper) is used as the printing medium. ![]()
